When I was growing up, you could find any kind of super hero you needed on TV. Batman and Robin stopping crooks like the Joker-“POWIE”- or Spiderman catching the bad guy with his webs (personally, I would be concerned about someone shooting webs out of their wrists-just saying) or Incredible Hulk-don’t make him angry! Or there was the ultimate super hero, Superman! The man of steel had it all! More powerful than a locomotive, leaping tall buildings in a single bound, faster than a speeding bullet AND he could fly AND had X-ray vision! How cool is that? As great as they all were and as much as I enjoyed watching the guys save the day, it left a little girl wondering: Where was Superwoman? Surely a girl could be a super hero too! THEN Wonder Woman came on the scene and I finally had a female super hero I could look up to!
What I didn’t realize though until I got older and started having kids of my own was that I already personally knew some Superwomen as I was growing up! And guess what? I became one too! Now, we may not possess the super power to leap over tall buildings, but we do possess the power to comfort a crying baby after getting only a few hours’ sleep while dinners on and we fold laundry. All at the same time! We can fix booboo’s and dry tears while on the phone with the doctor. We can listen to our husband tell us about his day while feeding three kids and cleaning up green baby food off the floor.
Our invisible capes flap behind us as we hustle through the grocery store, because let’s face it, no one wants to be in there any longer than absolutely necessary when you have two or three toddlers in tow! Our capes fly in the wind as we dart out the door and pile into the car heading to boy/girl scouts, baseball, soccer, basketball, football, karate, dance, music or whatever your children are involved in at the time, all while making sure all the proper uniforms are on bodies and equipment is in car! Speaking of car, Superwoman’s vehicle comes in various shapes and sizes but all have one thing in common: they carry all the essentials at all times! The gear, clothing, (wondering where all the missing socks are? Look in your car!), brushes and pony tails, snacks (check the expiration date first!) and water bottles. Lots and lots of water bottles!
We Superwomen cheer our kids on at whatever sport/art they are involved with then whisk them home and at the speed of light, get them ready for and tucked into bed only to collapse into our own beds shortly after so we can get some rest because we have to do it all again tomorrow. When morning comes, we wake with renewed hope for the day and energy, but Superwoman doesn’t go out there alone and unequipped! “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:13-17)

See, we are all Superwoman in real life to someone. We are our children’s and other children’s role model, so take in those treasured moments when your kid looks at you in awe and let your cape fly in the wind and know that all you’ve conquered today has been worthy of Super Hero status!
