Fight The Good Fight!

In this life, we all fight for something, whether it’s for freedom, our family or the parking space at the mall! If you’ve been around for even just five seconds, you know we all deal with struggles in this life but we can either struggle in vain or fight the good fight! So, what is it for you that is worth fighting for?

What is the good fight? Most likely going bumper to bumper with another driver at the mall would not fall in the “good fight” category. So what does? Getting up and moving on after a major disappointment, facing your depression, getting help for that addiction, seeking professional counsel to save your marriage and your family, just to name a few, you can fill in the blank.

Real talk: I have struggled with depression and anxiety. I have fought for my marriage. I have fought for my kids. I have fought to overcome a difficult childhood (does anyone have an easy one?) and I have fought to have healthy relationships with my family and friends. I only tell you this so that you can know that I do not say these things lightly here. I understand full well that nothing about this fight is easy, but it is so very worth it!

“Fight the good fight” sounds good and may be a rally booster, even set a burning desire deep within you to fight, but give yourself a few days of struggling on your own and you’ll soon realize this fight is too big to go it alone. So, isn’t it good news that you don’t have to go it alone? I say yes!

In Scripture, we read a cry from the psalmist, David, who endured many trials and a great deal of devastation, “In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered me by setting me free. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The Lord is my helper.” (Psalm 118:5-9a). David was man with A LOT of struggles and difficulties! Today we would call this guy a hot mess! But, David knew where his help came from and he understood Who it was that set him free from all his struggles and brought him through those hardships. Being set free sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Free from anxiety. Free from addiction. Free from anger. While God can and does set us free, it is extremely rare it happens overnight. But to know God is with you every minute and every step of the way as you fight is so encouraging! You do not fight alone! It’s also good to have a few people you trust to cheer you on but if you don’t have those people yet, allow God to encourage you and encourage yourself!

Fighting the good fight can be exhausting and there will be times you want to give up, but let me just encourage you now—DON’T! Look how far you’ve come, not how far you have to go and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. There may be days that’s all you can do, that’s okay! As long as you keep moving! We will never get anywhere by standing still.

There will always be battles. As soon as we conquer one thing, another battle will ensue but we can take those past moments and treasure what they have taught us and prepared us for— remembering that the victory is never won in a single battle but by staying the course and persevering. I pray you find your courage and strength in God and know that He is for you and not against you and will enable you to fight the good fight!
